			<head>Biography of Michael Aaron Rockland</head>
			<p>Michael Aaron Rockland was born July 14, 1935, in New York, NY.  He is the son of Milton and Bess (Sherry) Rockland.  He is married to Patricia Ard, a college professor and non-practicing attorney, and has five children:  David, Jeffrey, Keren, Kate, and Joshua.</p>
			<p>Rockland received a B.A. in 1955 from Hunter College (now Hunter College of the City University of New York), and a M.A in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Minnesota.
</p>
			<p>Rockland is a professor and chair of the American Studies Department at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ.  Before beginning his academic career, he worked with the United States State Department as a cultural attache at several overseas American embassies.  He still lectures widely overseas under the auspices of the State Department on issues in American culture and society, and on his own works.  He has lectured overseas most recently in Argentina, Canada, El Salavador, India, Israel, Italy, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, and Spain.</p>	
			<p>In addition to numerous published articles, poetry, and a screenplay, Michael Aaron Rockland is the author of eight books, five of which are in the Local History and Genealogy Department's collection of New Jersey Authors. </p>

			<head>Scope and Content of the Papers</head>
			<p>The material in The Michael Aaron Rockland Papers includes articles, pamphlets, poems, and some original manuscripts.  This material is intended to supplement books published by the author already in the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center's collection of works by New Jersey authors.  Currently, these papers cover the years 1967 through 2009 and is comprised of material created by Rockland in both English and Spanish.  Please note that the Michael Aaron Rockland Papers was created with the intention of being a cumulative collection. Subsequent books, articles, pamphlets, and poetry, will be added to the collection as this material becomes available. </p>

<p><title render="bold">Subseries A: Books</title>, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2007-2008.</p>
<p>This subseries contains two books edited, and introduced by, Michael Aaron Rockland, and three books published by the University of Leon in Spain. While the covers, title pages and contents of the books published by the University of Leon have been translated into Spanish, English versions of the text are available on the opposite pages.</p>

<p><title render="bold">Subseries B: </title> <title render="italic">A Bliss Case</title>, Correspondence, 1975, 1977, 1980-1981, 1988-1995, not dated.</p>
<p>This subseries is comprised of correspondence related to the early development of the idea for the book, <title render="italic">A Bliss Case</title>, then titled <title render="italic">Urban Adventure</title>; Rockland's early and later attempts to pitch the book to various publishers and their responses; Letters to and from various publications requesting permission to revise and reprint articles they had published in his new book and finally the correspondence between himself and his editors concerning corrections, potential marketing ideas and other publishing matters. Within the various pitch letters to various publishers are notes in Rockland's hand on how to pitch the book and other such related material. Arranged chronologically.</p>

<p><title render="bold">Subseries C: </title><title render="italic">Snowshoeing Through Sewers: Adventures in New York City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia</title>, <title render="bold">Sub-subseries 1: </title>Notes and Clippings, 1995, not dated.</p>
<p>This sub-subseries consists of Rockland's notes and clippings from various magazines and newspapers related to New Jersey and used as research for <title render="italic">Snowshoeing Through Sewers: Adventures in New York City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia</title>. Arranged chronologically.</p>

<p><title render="bold">Subseries C: </title> <title render="italic">Snowshoeing Through Sewers: Adventures in New York City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia</title>, <title render="bold">Sub-subseries 2:</title> Typescripts and Proofs, 1993-1994, not dated.</p>
<p>This sub-subseries is comprised of various versions of typed/computer generated manuscripts of <title render="italic">Snowshoeing Through Sewers: Adventures in New York
City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia</title> including its page proofs. All the typescripts feature changes and corrections by Rockland, his Editor and his Copy Editor. Arranged chronologically.

<p>This sub-subseries is comprised of material related to the photos used to illustrate <title render="italic">The Jews of New Jersey: A Pictorial History</title>. It includes a list of photo captions and a partial typescript of the text indicating  just where the photos should be placed through the use of numbered written into the text to correspond with the numbers in the photo caption list. In addition, xeroxes of the actual photos to be used as illustrations in the text. Arranged chronologically. </p>
<p><title render="bold">Subseries D: </title><title render="italic">The Jews of New Jersey: A Pictorial History</title>, <title render="bold">Sub-subseries 2:</title> Typescript; Typescripts, 2001, not dated.</p>
<p>This sub-subseries consists of typed/computer generated copies of versions of the manuscript for the work <title render="italic">The Jews of New Jersey: A Pictorial History</title> by Michael Aaron Rockland and Patricia M. Ard. It includes two corrected versions of the manuscript for the work, one containing xeroxes of the photos within. The corrected page proofs for the work are also present. The typescripts  feature changes and corrections by Rockland, his Editor and his Copy Editor to varying degrees, though it appears that the corrections on the page proofs are minimal. Arranged chronologically.</p>

<p><title render="bold">Subseries E: </title><title render="italic">Stones</title>, Typescript, 2007. </p>
<p>This subseries consists of a typed/computer generated copy of the manuscript for the work <title render="italic">Stones</title> by Michael Aaron Rockland. The typescript features changes and corrections by Rockland on the acknowledgement page (page 2).</p>


<p><title render="bold">Subseries F: </title><title render="italic">George Washington Bridge Poetry in Steel</title>, Galley proof, 2008.</p>
<p>This subseries consists of the galley proof of the manuscript for the work <title render="italic">The George Washington Bridge Poetry in Steel</title> by Michael Aaron Rockland. The typescript features minimal changes and corrections by Rockland throughout the text.</p>

<head>Acquisition Information</head>
<p>The material for the collection of works by New Jersey authors was first acquired by the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center in 1988, when Rockland presented the library with copies of <title render="italic">Homes on Wheels</title>, and <title render="italic">Sarmiento's Travels in the United States in 1847</title>.  The North Jersey History and Genealogy Center purchased copies of <title render="italic">A Bliss Case</title> in 1990, and <title render="italic">Snowshoeing Through Sewers</title> in 1995.

The first accession of material occurred when the author presented the material for the Michael Aaron Rockland Papers to the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center on July 29, 1997.
