Scope and Content of the Faesch Genealogy and Correspondence Collection

According to the typescript prepared by Mr. Alex Fowler in 1983, this collection contains records of Faesch genealogy and photocopies of original correspondence dating as far back as the 1400's. The last family records in the collection concern the Remy family genealogy up until 1827. It appears that the genealogical information came from the Basel Stadt Archive (Switzerland) and the Cologne Archives (Germany). All the original correspondence were written in either German, or French, and the German translations have been accredited to Ernest Krauss.

The table of contents found in box 1 folder 1 outlines 5 distinct parts of the collection: I. Genealogical Background, II. John Jacob Faesch Correspondence, III. Miscellaneous, IV. Correspondence pertaining to the Faesch Papers and V. Forty-two [42] Untranslated letters. The translated correspondence is listed in the Table of Contents and is accompanied by a synopsis of the letters' main subjects. Topics of interest include: John Jacob Faesch's position as "Ober Director"- Chief Manager of the Mount Hope Furnace, a stone furnace in which local ore became cannon, ammunition and utensils for the Revolutionary army; the recruiting of skilled workmen to work the furnaces; the death and burial of his wife in Morristown, New Jersey; his children's schooling in Hackensack, New Jersey; and his second wife and residence in Boonton, New Jersey.
